Starting a Podcast: What You Need

Are your friends and loved ones always encouraging you to start a podcast? Do you have interesting ideas and a unique perspective on a specific topic? It’s not as hard as you think. You can make a small investment to make your dreams come true.

While it’s up to you to come up with the topics and general themes, we can help on the tech side of things. This means the equipment and software needed to make a truly professional sounding podcast.

4 things you need to start your podcast

A Microphone

For a few hundred dollars you can get a decent podcasting microphone. Because podcasts are primarily talking, you really want your voice to sound clear and smooth. After all, people will be tuning in to listen to you speak and you want it to sound professional. You don’t even have to get these from a specialty shop, as most electronic stores and online retailers sell them.

Headphones

In order to hear yourself properly and any guests or co-hosts you might have, it’s recommended that you use a decent pair of over-ear headphones. This will allow you to monitor your sound quality and focus better. Just like the microphone, headphones are readily available and easy to get online or by curbside pickup.

Recording and editing software

For beginners, you can utilize some software that comes with your Mac or PC. On Mac, GarageBand is a good place to start. You need a program that will record high-quality sound and allow you to go back in and edit it.

While podcasts aren’t typically highly edited, as they have that authentic quality to them, you do want to edit out errors and background noise. Be sure to record your podcast in a quiet room to reduce the amount of editing you will need to perform.

Choose a platform

For people to be able to subscribe to and listen to your podcast you need to upload it to a platform. There are several platforms available for podcasts, including Apple and Spotify. Make sure you share it with friends, family and fans using social media.
