How to modify AVG Firewall settings

NOTE: This is an old set of instruction from AVG.  Now Avast bought out AVG so please see here for new instructions

This article was written specifically for our clients that use AVG CloudCare managed virus protection which has a firewall built in.  As of this article, we can not remotely managed your firewall settings, but we can remotely manage everything else.  You may find that if you have network connectivity problems you may have to allow traffic through your firewall.  Generally, you can block outside traffic but still allow your local network full access for network printers, servers, etc.  Here’s the detailed instructions how to set/modify your firewall and whitelist your network.

First thing you need to do is open a command prompt which you can get by right clicking your start button in Windows 8 or 10 and selecting Command Prompt.  In Windows 7 simply left click the start menu and type in cmd and press enter.

When in the command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter.  You’ll see a bunch of information which you may have to scroll up to find it if it scrolled too far down.  You are looking for IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway.  If you see the Default Gateway as in the image below is 192.168.13.1 you will need to remember this number.  You can write it down and close the command prompt.

Now you can launch AVG and with it open, select Options and click Firewall settings.  In the next Window that appears, click the Expert mode. button in the bottom left corner.

With Expert mode selected, you will see Defined Networks as an option on the left side.  Click that option and then on the right side you’ll see several networks, one of which is IP addresses whitelist.  Highlight IP addresses whitelist and click Edit network below.

In the next Window that appears, you want to click Add IP, then another Window pops up where you can type in IP address range.  This is where you need to remember the Default Gateway you wrote down earlier of 192.168.13.1 or in the screen shot below 192.168.0.1.  Whatever your number was for Default Gateway, write it in the From field.  Write the same number in the To field with the exception of the last octet being 255 instead of 1.

Now click OK, OK, OK and then x out of the AVG interface.  You’re done.
