AVG Free edition – Without Zen please!

AVG Free without ZenAVG is pretty awesome, but why force the Zen on every install of AVG free edition?  Many people just have a single computer to manage and don’t want Zen getting in the way as an extra program, no only to download and install but the shortcut that gets created on the desktop is Zen, which from there you can open the actual AVG anti-virus interface.  That’s ridiculous!  So how do you download AVG free edition without Zen?

First off, if you go through AVG’s main page the button on the home page to the free edition includes Zen.  So it’s kinda hidden but it does exist from their website.  Even if you go to something like download.com you will be getting Zen with it.

To get AVG Free without Zen, it looks like you could navigate through the top menu “PC” and then you see the first 3 products are free with Zen.  Then there is a section for “Single device” which has AVG Antivirus FREE.  That option should give you AVG without Zen but it directs you to Cnet which includes Zen.  Instead, go to the Support Tab, then Products and downloads.  Search for AVG Free or simply click here to go straight to the AVG downloads page .  There is an online downloader and offline full install options that don’t include Zen.

UPDATE December 2016
You can no longer access the free version without Zen from their website as described above.  For some reason they have hidden it, but it is still available via direct download.  According to their discussion forum, you can use one of the direct downloads below depending if you want 32bit or 64bit:

32- Bit : http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/AVG_Antivirus_Free_x86_694.exe
64- Bit : http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/AVG_Antivirus_Free_x64_693.exe
