Many people when purchasing just about anything, including items other than computers or electronics, are so focused on the price, that they don’t truly look at what they are getting for the price. Sometimes I hear “I could get a new computer for that price”. I say “what kind of computer would you get for that price?” and “it wouldn’t be a new computer at that price.” or “It would be a less powerful computer than what you have now!”
So to put things in perspective as far as price goes, I thought it would be helpful to show you the most expensive make/model of each component in a computer that you can buy. Note that prices vary a bit depending on where you purchase from, but the prices shouldn’t be off by much, depending if you buy individual parts directly from a warehouse, versus a computer repair shop, versus a packaged deal with the computer built. So here’s the list of expensive parts to build a desktop computer…

You could argue that for the price of almost any individual component you could purchase an entire brand new computer for that price. So you need to be careful when you ask someone to build you a computer and you want the best of the best. If you add this all up, this computer would cost $16,510 CDN. That’s how much my car cost me brand new!
A quick tip: Hard drives are the biggest bottleneck in computers today, so if you invest the money in a fast hard drive, you will get an incredible speed increase.
